Tuesday Tidbits: DO YOU HEAR WHAT I HEAR?

After more than thirty books published, I’ve had the honor of having my first one put on audio format. Not the first book of mine that was published. It’s the first book in my Quilting Circle series.

It has been interesting to go through the process. Because my Quilting Circle series is published through a small publisher, I have had a lot of input into things like the covers and now the audio version.
First step was to find a narrator. We go through a site called ACX. I first needed to find a narrator. My publisher put up my novel as accepting auditions. I checked boxes for what I’m looking for in a narrator. Because I write romance, I felt a female voice would work best. I checked voice and style type. I needed a narrator with a general American voice; no distinct accent. I chose a storytelling type style. There were many other boxes I checked off as well. I can’t remember them now. This narrowed the list of possibilities from a gajillion to many thousands. We received a few auditions, but no one that really fit.
So I went on the site and listened to a LOT of samples. Some had obvious hissing in the background, so I ruled those out, because I wouldn’t enjoy listening to a book with hissing. Others didn’t have the right voice or spoke to soft.
I found a handful of narrators to start with that I liked what they had in their samples. I emailed them through the site and asked them if they would like to audition for my book. Some did and some didn’t.
We decided on Pamela Gregory. My publisher sent her an offer, and she accepted. The next day, one of the other narrators I had asked to audition sent an audition. I had really liked her voice as well. We had to tell her sorry, but she could audition for one of my publisher’s other books that was open for auditions. I love Pamela’s cheerful voice and believe I have the right narrator. It was all in God’s hands.

After that, the narrator records the first fifteen minutes or first chapter for approval. I listen to it while following along in the book for accuracy. I make notes of things that need to be fixed, whether it is an error in reading or how a portion is read. The narrator fixes those and sends a revised recording. Narrators don’t have re-record the whole chapter. They can simply record the sentence or portion in question, remove the bad copy, and slip in the new and improved portion in the appropriate place. It’s like magic to me. I wouldn’t have a clue as how to do that.
Once the first bit is approved, the narrator records the rest of the book and usually sends a few chapters at a time. I listen to them as they come in and send my notes on what needs to be changed just like the first chapter.
Then when all the chapters are approved, the project needs a producer. On ACX, a narrator is often also the producer. Mine is.
Then the whole thing is uploaded to ACX for approval. A few weeks later, it is available for listening pleasure.
The process was more interesting than it might have been because my daughter is a narrator/producer on ACX. She has always been very good at reading aloud. You may be wondering why she isn’t my narrator/producer. She is branding herself as a fantasy narrator, and I write Christian romance. If she didn’t already have fantasy projects she was reading for, she would have considered it. But it was more than a single book commitment. My publisher prefers to have the same narrator/voice for an entire series. It was fun talking to her about the process from her end.
We just finished recording book two, which will be available in a few weeks, and we’ll start recording book three very soon.

I love having some of my books as audio versions. I love this series and am so excited it’s going to be available in audio.

Tuesday Tidbits: NATURAL ROCK CONCERT

What’s so special about this half-mile-wide assemblage of boulders and rocks in Montana?

When individual rocks are struck with a hammer, these angular stones ring with a bell-like sound.

I love learning new things about God’s amazing creation. I just marvel at how much fun He must have had creating all these different things for us humans to discover.

In this video, you can hear the ringing sound they make and the difference from rocks around them that don’t ring.

Depending on the size and shape of the rocks, they produce different tones. But not all the rocks ring, only about thirty percent of them. When a ringing rock is removed from the others, it no longer rings, or rather has a sound out of the human hearing range. Depending on the time of year, the pitch of the rocks can also change due to air temperature and factors like snow on the ground.

The exact cause for these boulders to be musical is unknown, but it has something to do with the layout, density, and spaces between the stones. Interestingly, the rocks ring at a B-flat; the same note a black hole far out in the universe has been humming for eons.

Pennsylvania also has fields of these amazing rocks. In this video, a trio of musicians compose and play a song on the stones.

The U.S. isn’t the only place to find ringing rocks. These amazing stones can be found in Scotland, England, Australia, Mexico, Namibia, and India. Who knows how many other places that are yet to be discovered. Some of the blue stones in England’s Stonehenge also have these ringing qualities.

I hope to someday be able to visit one of these sites of ringing rocks. I’m not musical at all, but it would be fun to make them ring.

Tuesday Tidbits: SWEET BITS

Pop Quiz!

I hear your groans. These two little words can strike terror into the heart of any student. But fear not, you won’t be graded. This quiz is for your own information to see if you know these little bits of candy trivia. So let’s get started.

Question 1: What is that little slip of paper called that sticks out of the top of a Hershey’s Kiss?
Question 2: Cotton candy was invented in 1897 by a dentist and a confectioner. What was their original name for it?
Question 3: Did you know that there are at least six flowers that smell like chocolate? Can you name one? Two? Three? All?
Question 4: How long does it take to make one Peep?
Question 5: What do the Ms in M&Ms stand for?

Question 6: What is a single square/rectangle of a Hershey’s chocolate bar called?

Question 7: What was the PEZ candy originally developed as?

Question 8: How many licks does it takes to get to the chocolate center of a Tootsie Pop?

Question 9: What are Sport Beans? And who makes them?
Question 10: How much is too much candy?

ANSWERS:
1. Nigglywiggly

2. Fairy Floss
3. Oncidium Orchid, Chocolate Daisy, Cosmos-Chocolate, Chocolate Vine, Columbine-Chocolate Soldier, & Carolina Allspice

Cosmos-Chocolate
Chocolate Daisy
Carolina Allspice

4. It used to take 27 hours! (I don’t think that would be worth it.) With automation, it now takes six minutes. That translates to 5.5 million a day rather than the original less than one.

5. Mars and Murrie, the surnames of the two men, Forrest Mars & Bruce Murrie, who developed and financed the candy.
6. A pip
7. PEZ comes from the German word pfefferminz, which means peppermint. PEZ was created by an anti-smoking advocate in the 1920s. It was a mint to help people kick the habit. The candy’s slogan was “Smoking prohibited, PEZing allowed.”
8. According to the owl in the 1970 TV commercial, it was three, because after that he took a bite and crunched to the center.

But according to licking machines (Yes, there is such a thing), it take 364 to 411. But it take human lickers only 144 to 252.
9. Sport Beans are a line of energy beans made by Jelly Belly, containing carbohydrates, electrolytes, B vitamins, and vitamin C.

10. 262 fun-sized candy bars. According to the American Chemical Society, if a 180 lb. person ate that much, it would poison them. BUT they would throw up long before they could eat that many in one sitting, so no worries of death by candy.

Anyone else feel a diabetic coma coming on? =0)
