ThrowBACKLIST Thursday: HERITAGE

Rachel Coe longs for a heritage.
By marrying into a wealthy Boston family, she hopes to inherit just that. Then a strange letter names her the heir of her alleged grandfather's home on Mackinac Island. But, as she sorts through the past, she learns her true legacy may leave her more alone than ever. When the beautiful Rachel moves in across the street to finish the family tree her Ojibwa grandfather started, Will Tobin is more than happy to assist her. His heart gets ahead of his head, though, and before long he finds he's fallen in love with an engaged, unsaved woman. Can Will offer his friendship and guard his heart while Rachel struggles to reclaim her lineage? Can the love of a family, a man, and a Savior be found on one tiny island?

Does the clay say to the potter, "What are you making?" — Isaiah 45:9

Heritage is book 4 in my contemporary Mackinac Island series.

When researching Mackinac Island for this series, it never crossed my mind what the island might be like in the off-season. The Grand Hotel opens in the mid to late spring and closes in the fall. The main street shops were much the same way. I thought of it as a summer resort island. Though it is, it is also so much more.

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that people reside on the island year-round. They have school and everything.

So, I naturally wanted to include a story in this series that took place in this off-season. I learned about the ice bridge that forms across the Straight of Mackinac connecting the island to the upper peninsula and about designated roads approved for snowmobiles in the winter. I also learned that people plunked their used Christmas trees along the safe route of the ice bridge. I understand a snowmobile or two have ended up in an icy, watery grave when the bridge is being tested before the ice is thick enough to traverse, but someone has to be brave enough to test it. This ice bridge gives the residents a freedom they don’t have the rest of the year.

Rachel thought she knew who she was, but when she learned about her heritage, she had to rethink not only who she was, but who she wanted to be.

In this story, I enjoyed bring Lorelei and Garth back from the first book in the series so readers could see how they were doing.

I love Mackinac Island and hope to write many more stories set there. I have a historical series in mind with one of the stories connecting directly to one in this series.

ThrowBACKLIST Thursday: THE GRAND HOTEL

Next up in my Mackinac Island contemporary series is THE GRAND HOTEL, book 3.

A family legend brings Aimee Mikkelson to the Grand Hotel on Michigans Mackinac Island. As she seeks to uncover a hidden inheritance, Aimees carefree nature hits a wall of organization - Mr. Dillon Thurough. Now her mission is two-fold: Recover the treasure and help Dillon break out of his routine. Dillon Thurough hates surprises. As one of the Grand Hotels assistant managers, he has a one-, five-, and ten-year plan, and the free-spirited Ms. Mikkelson doesn’t fit into any of them. Yet somehow, her ways are getting to him. As they work together to follow the antiquated clues, could Aimee and Dillon also be following the Lords map to romance?

I wrote this story because it was the next in this series. I decided to pit a free-spirit with a hard-core planner. They were fun to play off each other. When writing this Mackinac Island series, I wanted to show different aspects of the island. This one featured the Grand Hotel. I fell in love with Mackinac Island and the Grand Hotel while watching Somewhere In Time. I love that movie.

The head scratcher with that movie is the watch.  Who bought the watch? The heroine got the watch from the hero when he traveled back in time. When he got sucked back to his time, the watch got left behind. Then years later, when the heroine was an old lady, she gave the watch that he had left in past, but not yet in his current timeline. So she got it from him, and he got it from her, but no one actually bought it.

Hmm?

The initial building of the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island was built in three short months and opened on July 10, 1887. Since then, many additions have been made to the hotel. The lumber for constructing the hotel was brought over during the winter and slid across on the ice bridge.

When the hotel opened, the rates were $3-$5 per night. The price skyrocketed to $6 per day per person in 1919.

In 1947, another movie was filmed, in part, at the Grand Hotel called This Time For Keeps, starring Jimmy Durante and Esther Williams. The Grand Hotel pool was built for Esther Williams for that movie.

The Grand Hotel’s front porch is the longest in the world at 660 feet.

Fun note about the cover for this book. I took the picture of the Grand Hotel that was used. Where the lilac bush is was a tree. I said I’d love it if they could put in lilacs instead of the green tree. And they did! Of course, they did some other doctoring, but I love the result.

Once all four books in this series had come out through the book club they were written for, Barbour combined the the first three into one volume. LAKESIDETHE ISLAND, & THE GRAND HOTEL are included in MICHIGAN WEDDINGS: Contemporary Romance: Michigan's Mackinac Island offers a safe harbor for wounded hearts seeking retreat. Lorelei returns to the island carrying a secret that has stolen her joy, but an old acquaintance is waiting to try to restore it. Haley's job on the island hides her from family conflict and the fear of being used by others until a handsome customer arrives asking for her help. Aimee seeks family treasure and adventure at the Grand Hotel, but one of the assistant manager's adherences to routine threatens her goals. Will God's guidance lead these women down the path of forgiveness and romance?

Next month, book 4 in this series,
HERITAGE.

ThrowBACKLIST Thursday: THE ISLAND

Last month, I interviewed my sister about LAKESIDE (book 1 in my Mackinac Island contemporary romance series), so I thought I’d continue that series with book 2.

THE ISLAND
Haley’s heart would be safe on the island.
Mackinac Island was the perfect place to soothe her wounds and avoid the manipulation of her family. But when a lone passenger boards her tour carriage, Haley Tindale feels the walls around her heart shaking. Can he be trusted?
Brent Walker is searching for a young man when he encounters Haley. He finds it hard to concentrate on his mission. Perhaps he should quit the case and focus on Haley. Or maybe her insight into the island could be of use to him. Can a woman terrified of being used surrender to God and His plan? Will Haley’s wounded heart forever be an impenetrable island?

Having visited Mackinac Island several times, I was confused by the two different spellings. Mackinac or Mackinaw? Which is it? I was sure they did that to confound spelling-challenged people such as myself. The island is spelled with a “c” at the end and the city is spelled with a “w”, but what about the fort, the bridge, and the straight? Without going into too much gruesome detail on the origin of the word, everything is spelled with a “c” (Mackinac) except the city (Mackinaw City).

The story I heard was to have less confusion for the post office, the mainland city changed the “c” to a “w.” I can see that. People would likely address thing to Mackinac and not specify “city” or “island.” But did the one little letter change at the end of the name really make a difference? I don’t know. I’m just glad I’ve figured out the spelling conundrum.

When I had proposed LAKESIDE, the acquisitions editor at the publishing house asked if I had any other stories set on Mackinac Island. I told her no—but I could come up with some. And I did. At the time, Heartsong Presents was interested in four book series, so I came up with three more stories. After all the books came out through their book club, they repackaged them into a single volume.

I decided to vary my stories. Book 1, LAKESIDE was set mostly off the island with my characters going for a visit. Book 2, THE ISLAND I chose to have a heroine who worked on the island during the summer as a carriage tour driver. In book 3, THE GRAND HOTEL, I reversed that, having the hero work on the island and the heroine visiting. For book 4, HERITAGE I wanted to explore winter life on the island with year-round residents.

By the time all the books were contracted and I was writing the fourth, the publishing house had changed their repackaging model and were going to include only three of the four stories. I waffled on which three to include and decided the first three. Why, you ask? Because I needed to add wedding scenes for the one to be included in the repackaged collection, and for those three, the wedding scenes popped into my head.

LAKESIDE, THE ISLAND, & THE GRAND HOTEL are included in MICHIGAN WEDDINGS
