With this story I had to think a bit ahead on so that I could plant my heroine and hero back in book 2. That meant I needed to figure out a few things about them and their backstory while writing the previous book. Some times those things come naturally, and other times it’s a struggle. But I needed to put them in Bridget’s classroom and show a little interest between them. Then when I wrote book 3, I needed to give these two reasons to have moved from Roche Harbor down to Friday Harbor. Which didn’t prove to be too difficult.

Olivia and Troy’s story takes place in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island in Washington State. Friday Harbor is the only incorporated town on the archipelago of the San Juan Islands. Friday harbor is on the east shore of the island.

One story on how the harbor got named goes that someone in a boat off shore called to a man on the beach, “What bay is this?” The man on land called back, “Friday!” because he thought the man had asked what day is it. A town is named and a legend is born. I don’t know if that story is true, but it’s fun, and I love little quirky things like that.

Though Troy is a charmer, his heart belongs to only one girl. I still love Troy’s undying loyalty to Olivia. We all hope for someone to look past the stupid we do and love us anyway.

ThrowBACKLIST Thursday: TITANIC: VOYAGE OF INTENT

On April 14, 1912 at 11:40 p.m., RMS Titanic struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage.

On April 15, 1912 at 2:20 a.m., the unsinkable Titanic disappeared beneath the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

That was nearly 107 years ago. Of all the shipwrecks and ocean disasters, there is something about the Titanic that tugs at people’s hearts. There is a mystery and—strangely—a romantic aura surrounding it.

In 2012, when I did research about the Titanic, I learned that there were several factors that contributed to this tragedy. If any one of them were changed, the unthinkable might not have happen or at least hundreds of more lives could have been saved. Here are those factors as I remember them.

1) It was a calm, moonless night. One would think calm seas would make travel safer. Titanic needed to cross a section the Atlantic known to have icebergs. A moonless night means that a black sky is reflecting on black water. Calm seas meant that no or very few waves lapped up against the base of the ice, which would have made them a little more detectible. They were virtually invisible. These kind of icebergs were known as black-bergs. They blended in perfectly with the night sky and dark waters.

2) If the lookout could have seen the iceberg even a few seconds earlier, it could have made a huge difference in warning the captain and engine room. The Titanic just might have been able to miss the iceberg or have hit it less severely.

3) Titanic reversed engines to slow and turned to try to avoid or lessen the collision. From what I understand, slowing lessened Titanic’s maneuverability. Some speculate if Titanic had held its speed or even sped up, it might have been able to turn sharper, reducing the impact. But we’ll never know, because no one can go back and have a do-over.

4) The lower bulkheads between compartments weren’t water tight. That’s to say, they didn’t seal at the top. So when water poured in and filled up the damaged compartment, the water spilled over into the next and the next and the next until Titanic was too heavy to stay afloat. If the compartments had been water tight, Titanic could have limped to safety.

5) The lifeboats have a two-fold tragedy. First, there weren’t enough for all the passengers and crew. They cluttered up the decks and made the ship less visually appealing. And second, when the first lifeboats were being loaded, a lot of people didn’t believe there was any real danger. Why would anyone want to get off a warm comfortable unsinkable luxury liner and be lowered in a cold, tiny lifeboat into the vast Atlantic Ocean? So the first few lifeboats launched with many seats vacant. A lifeboat that could carry over sixty people left with less than half its potential capacity. People just didn’t believe Titanic would sink. After all, it was advertised as “unsinkable.”

6) The radio operator on the SS Californian (a ship close enough to have rendered aid) had shut down the radio for the night, just ten minutes before Titanic struck the iceberg. So Titanic’s distress call didn’t reach them. Having the radio unmanned during the night was standard practice. It’s not anymore. Because of the Titanic tragedy, radios are now manned twenty-four hours. If the SS Californian had received the SOS, hundreds of more lives would have been saved.

If any one of these things had been different, fewer—if any—people would have perished.

So naturally after all that research, I wanted to set a story on the doomed luxury liner.

In honor of “ZOLA’S CROSS-COUNTRY ADVENTURE”, a novella in The MISSAdventure BRIDES Collection, releasing this month and in honor of the heroine being named after my mom, Zola, and the hero after my dad Allen, I thought it would be fun to interview my mom about one of my backlist titles.

ME: Mom, what did you think when your youngest daughter first started writing books?

MOM (Zola):
Excited. And proud!!! Even in grade school, you wrote and wanted to be a writer. You said it was to get the characters out of your head. You were always making notes as you got older to use.

ME: I still need to get those characters out of my head. What is one of your favorite books that I’ve written? What is it about?

MOM (Zola):
I’ll give a mother’s answer. All of them!

ME: You always were my cheerleader. Early on in my writing career when I’d be down about my writing, I’d send you something I wrote because I needed to hear your usual reaction, “This is the best thing you’ve ever written!” And it would help me get encouraged again. I know that not everything I write is the best, but I know in your eyes it is, and I’m so grateful for that.
    But back to my question of picking one of your favorites. Unless you want to answer each of my questions for every book I’ve written, you’ll need to choose just one for this interview.

MOM (Zola):
If you insist, Newlywed Games.

It was your first one. Daddy and I were excited that this was a full length and not a short story!!!

ME: What did you take away from this story?

Little white lies can get you in just as much trouble as big ones.

ME: Yes, they can. What is your favorite part of this story?

MOM (Zola):
The mothers trying to control things.

ME: Anything else you’d like to tell us about this story?

MOM (Zola):
I had to keep reminding myself this was my daughter's book.

ME: It was a fun story, and I enjoyed writing it.

If anyone may be wondering why I only interviewed my mom and not my stepdad too that I named the hero after, it's because he passed away years ago. But I imagine him smiling down from heaven and enjoying the story too. =0)

But coming in late to the war and the time needed to train pilots, left a surplus of Jennys (as they were called). People could buy them cheap. Pilots would fly from town to town, landing in fields, and then offering rides for a fee.

I chose the name Lizzie (short for Elizabeth) for my heroine because I have her drive a Model T, which is nicknamed the Tin Lizzie. I liked that she had some mechanical know-how.

Cashmere, Washington is a real town. Both of my parents were raised there, and growing up, I often visited one set of grandparents, who continued to live there. I always loved Cashmere, a quaint little town. It is home to the famous Aplets & Cotlets candy.

I also wrapped up Finn's story. He was a drifter who moved through all three stories.
