Tuesday Tidbits: NAVIGATING THE PUBLISHING WATERS

It seems like every time I turn around there is something else to learn about the publishing industry, and there are more and more restrictions on what authors can’t do.

Apparently, I can’t offer a free story or free anything as a thank-you for subscribing to my blog or newsletter, because then the person subscribing to my blog or newsletter is not doing so freely. They are somehow being coerced. But I can give a free story away to subscribers if it’s a secret, and they find out after the fact.

If someone tells me that they will give me a free book (or whatever) for signing up for their newsletter, I have a choice. No one is coercing me. I need to decide if the trade off is worth it. If I like this person’s writing enough to want their book, then I’ll likely be interested in what they have to say in their newsletter.

Nothing’s free. Not really.

Another thing I’m confused on is giving complementary advance copies of a book and ask the person to give a review. I’m a bit hazy on the particulars. I can’t really force anyone to post a review when I’ve given them a copy. I can request that they post a review, but I can’t mandate that they do or that it be a positive review. Also they need to say they received a complimentary copy and that their review is their own opinion and they weren’t required to post a positive review. That all makes sense. I’d want to know as much when reading a review.

I’m trying to learn all these rules so I can do things rights. I will likely miss a few things here and there, but when I know about something, I want to do it right. I’m a rule follower.

There is just so much to know and learn. But, with persistence, I’ll get there.
