MISSAdventure Brides series: A COURAGEOUS DAMSEL

ZOLA’S CROSS-COUNTRY ADVENTURE in MISSAdventure Brides Collection
What’s a courageous young woman in 1904 to do when challenged to drive across the country? Accept, of course. Will the journalist tasked to tail her steal her heart? Or sabotage her efforts?

In 1903, the first successful transcontinental road trip took place. When Zola Calkin hears of this and the men in her circle of friends laugh at women trying such a thing, she rises to the challenge and recreates this trip the following year to become the first woman to drive across the country. Without the assistance of a man. No one believes she will succeed in this endeavor. From time to time, even she has doubts herself.
She and her female cousin learn to drive and repair the automobile they purchased and plan out every detail of their trip. Word of their venture is splashed across newspapers. Most people—both men and women—doubt a woman can make the trip. Many are looking for her to fail.
I love my Zola character for many reasons. One, I love her tenacity to tackle this adventure and perseverance to see it through even when it was hard. Two, I named her after my mom. With a unique name like Zola, I had to find a very special character to live up to the name. (Love you, Mom!)
As the story goes, my great-grandma Zola’s friends said that they knew a fellow with an unusual name. My great-grandpa Montz’s friends said they knew a girl with an unusual name and that the two of them should go on a date. Neither of them wanted to go on a blind date, but they finally gave in to get their friends to stop bugging them. They went on the date—and as they say—the rest is history. So my mom was named after her grandma, and one of her brothers was named after their grandpa.
This post is longer than my other posts on this novella will be, but I wanted to add the story of where my mom’s name came from. Where my great-grandma got the name, I have no idea.
Happy Adventuring!

Love Is One of Life’s Greatest Adventures
Seven daring damsels don’t let the norms of their eras hold them back. Along the way these women attract the attention of men who admire their bravery and determination, but will they let love grow out of the adventures?
