Tuesday Tidbits: BE KIND, PLEASE REWIND

I have come to love doing historical research. As I’m digging in to learn about one thing, something else pops up that piques my interest or some random thought loosely related—or not—pops into my head, and I go chasing after that.

It’s like I’m traveling down a road and another road branches off. Some times I venture down that road a short ways and get back on my original path. Other times, I’m miles down that road and have taken another road off it and another road and another. And it’s hard to find my way back.

“Now, where was I headed when I started on this journey?”

Eventually, I remember and make my way back to my original goal.

And some times, I like the new path better than the original one and keep going.

As I was doing research about bookbinding for a post on another blog, I was imagining the difference in reading materials of old. Specifically, the switch from having information written on scrolls to flat, bound pages. After all, the research I was doing was about those flat, bound pages.

So I was picturing a person reading a scroll, the kind with wooden dowels on both ends of a very long piece of parchment, vellum, or paper with columns going the short way across.

I thought about what a person would do in between reading sessions. One couldn’t very well stick a bookmark where they left off. Or would that be a scroll-mark? So how would one keep their place in a very long scroll?

The easiest might be to roll both ends together at the stopping point. But what happens if someone else picked up that scroll and started reading in a different place? Then the first person’s place would be lost.

Then I got to thinking. What was the protocol for when you finished a particular scroll? Was the reader required to re-roll it back to the beginning? And what about people who didn’t. Did scrolls have the equivalent of a Be Kind, Please Rewind sticker that rental places put on VHS tapes?

I remember during the transition from VHS to DVD, that the DVDs some of the places we rented from had the same Be Kind, Please Rewind sticker that they put on VHS tapes. How does one “rewind” a DVD? We had a good laugh about it. We’d finish a DVD and say, “Make sure you rewind that.” And the reply would either be, “Already done.” Or, “Oops. I forgot.” And then we would all chuckle.

Today, “scroll” has a very different meaning for most people. We scroll to read the next thing on our various social media places, or through our long list of pictures we’ve taken.

I strolled from bookbinding to scrolling in a blip of a thought that jumped into my brain unbidden. I love it when that happens. It’s a lot of fun!
